No. The Surety company (Claims Department) must thoroughly investigate the claim and then decide as to whether or not they will pay it out.

Will they contact me during the investigation so I have a chance to answer any of their questions and make a statement in my defense?

Upon receipt of the notice of claim, the bond company will send to you a copy of the claim, a copy of the indemnity agreement you signed when the bond was issued, and instruct you to defend them in accordance with the terms of the indemnity agreement. From that point, you'll be in regular communication with the claims department and will have an opportunity to offer your defense.
