performance bond for supplier?

we have a 2.6 million contract that we need the builder/designer to bond (with us paying the premium). the company manufacturing the major components of the project have retained a contractor to do the installation, can the bond be obtained by the manufacturer/supplier for the entire project cost or must it be obtained by the g/c doing the construction on site? the manufacturer is in a different state than us, is that an issue?
