    Permit for my deck

I have been told by the township I live in that I need to have a permit for the deck a contractor is building for me. I am also being told he has to be a bonded contractor in our state. How would I know if this contractor is bonded or not and why is this important?

    Bonded

The township may just want to make sure your contractor is covered by general liability insurance. A lot of times people mis-use the term "bonded" when all they really mean is insurance coverage. I would get clarification from the township and find out exactly what they are requiring.

Our state has a licensing and bonding requirement for all contractors that do permanant foundation construction. I am told there are strict requirements for the permit and one is that I use a licensed and BONDED contractor. Does this help?
