I am looking to hire a contractor to do some work at my home. And most contractors advertise that they are bonded. Do you have to be licensed to get a bond?
A number of states require contractors to obtain a license and a Surety Bond to protect the residents of that state. Some municipalities also requiring licensing. It's very each for a contractor to advertise that they are bonded. It would be wise to ask them for proof of that bonding. Remember though, that if a contractor does work for you and doesn't finish and you feel you have a claim, there are limits as to the amount the bond will cover. It varies from state to state. You really want to be sure you have a formal contract drawn up with the contractor in the event of a default and not expect a bond to take care of everything.Originally Posted by Pacman
