Is it "illegal" to broker freight without a bond in place?
That's a question best asked to FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration). If I had to guess, however, I would say yes. You would also be hardpressed to find someone to haul freight for that doesn't ask for proof of your bond.Originally Posted by Bond Guy

You must have broker authority from the FMCSA to broker freight.
Brokering freight without authority is subject up to a 10k fine per occurence I was told.
If a carrier takes freight from an un authorized broker they would just be asking for trouble. As there is no guarantee they would be paid.
