In my experience, when a surety files the BMC-84 electronically, they are not permitted to issue a paper bond. I've been told that they can be fined by FMCSA if they do. When you think about it, the FMCSA website is much more up-to-date than a paper copy of a bond. Anyone can go to the website and after entering the MC#, see the status of the bond. When providing a paper copy of the bond, it could be cancelled the next week and no one would know it. You just have to try to convince your client that electronic is the way to go for the most up to the minute status of their bond. They can print out the FMCSA record to put in their packets of they want to provide proof of a bond.
